South American (Paraguayan) harp

On the easternmost edge of North America- somewhat from both continents- might seem a precarious perch for a South American harp Player. Still, Gayle has found ways for her music to thrive as she has followed the path of her harp.

There are many kinds of harps in Latin America, including the Venezuelan harp, Mexican harp and arpa llanera - harp of the plain. Gayle's harp is a Paraguayan harp, which is the most popular of the South American harps. In construction and playing techniques, these harps are quite different from the traditional/Celtic harp more familiar in North America.

Paraguay is a land of rivers, landlocked within the heart of South America. In Paraguay, the harp is the national instrument, and radio stations must play at least one hour of harp music each day in order to maintain their license! There are many harp players in bands, on the streets, and harp-mailing is a true folk art. The music, language and culture descend from the Spanish influence and the native Guaraní. The harp playing style and techniques are vibrant and dynamic, and the music is a passionate and living thing. Paraguay is an island of music surrounded by a land rich in music, culture, language and mythology.
